There has been a rise in new dog breeds within the dog kingdom. So much so, that dog breeders started to combine specific dog breeds to achieve certain characteristics, both physical and personality-wise.

Goldendoodles are known to be a dog breed that have a very curly coat. However, the coat type of the Straight Hair Goldendoodle is very different from the usual wavy coat.

And that is just one of the many beautiful characteristics that the Straight Hair Goldendoodles have. The curl gene in this dog breed is completely lacking, but there are some other characteristics of this dog breed that could potentially make it better than the usual Goldendoodle!

We are going to go through the most interesting facts about this dog breed. From the origin of the Straight Hair Goldendoodle, to its characteristic teddy bear looks, all the way to the kind of coat it possesses and the health of this dog breed.

So, buckle up, and let’s talk about this dog breed!

What Is A Straight Hair Goldendoodle?

There are many dog breeds that can only appear as a straight-hair version. However, today’s star of the show, the Goldendoodle, has two kinds of coat.

The Straight Hair Goldendoodle is a Goldendoodle without the curly coat gene. Therefore, the Straight Hair Goldendoodle is not a crossbreed of any kind, but just a regular Goldendoodle which is born without the curly type of coat. Goldendoodle coat types can vary between straight and curly.

Just because the Labradoodles can have the same genetic mutation as the Goldendoodle, that doesn’t make them less of a Doodle.

They may lack the characteristic dense, curly hair, however, they are still acknowledged as a doodle, because they aren’t mixed with any other new dog breed in order to achieve this type of coat.

Can A Goldendoodle Have Straight Hair?

The Poodle parent gives the Goldendoodle wavy hair. The dog’s coat is something very characteristic of this dog breed, which separates it from the rest of the dog breeds that have curly coat parent breeds.

However, Goldendoodles can have straight hair thanks to a lack of the curl gene. I know that it is very odd to see a Goldendoodle with straight hair. All of us are used to the Goldendoodle dog breed, and their utmost teddy bear looks.

It is not typical for a goldendoodle to have straight hair, because the usual type of coat that Goldendoodles have is a curly coat or a wavy coat. That was the usual type of coat that was characteristic for Goldendoodles in the past, but now, they don’t often appear with the straight hair coat type.

The Golden Doodle started appearing around the 1980s and 1990s when dog breeders concluded that mixing any dog breed with a Poodle can result in a hypoallergenic dog breed.

Therefore, Poodle breeders rapidly started breeding Poodles with other dog breeds, resulting in many Poodle mixes around the late 20th century.

And that is probably the time around which our Straight Hair Goldendoodle saw the light of the world, together with many other Doodles, including the Labradoodle.

The exact year or date of the first Goldendoodle or the first Straight Hair Goldendoodle was born is sadly not known. However, they are known to have first appeared around the end of the 20th century.

Origin Of The Golden Retriever

Believe it or not, the purebred Golden Retriever is actually a Scottish dog breed.

Sir Dudley Marjoribanks created the Golden Retriever in Scotland throughout the 19th century by selectively breeding Flat-coated Retrievers and Tweed Water Spaniels as well as certain other British dog breeds.

Several romantic tales about the breed’s beginnings were published before the extremely thorough study book that Marjoribanks had scrupulously kept was published in 1952.

The term “Flat-coated Retriever, Golden” was once used to describe Golden Retrievers. The Golden Retriever was first thought of as a colored variation of the earlier breed.

He began by getting Nous, a Flat-coated Retriever dog, that was yellow in color. The sole yellow puppy in a litter that was otherwise all black when Nous was born in June 1864. Although unusual, liver, brown, golden, or very yellow Golden Retriever puppies came out of a litter of two black Golden Retrievers. The Pedigree of that famous Golden Retriever Nous was the start of many tales and stories that celebrated the origins and the beauty of the Golden Retriever.

According to early accounts, Nous was bought in Brighton from a Russian stage trainer. According to the study book, Lord Chichester bred Nous, a Flat-coated Retriever, at the Stanmer Park property close to Brighton.

Due to British prohibitions upon the breeding of larger dog breeds during the Second World War, this breed did not suffer the same fate as many British dog breeds since there was an abundance of high-quality breeding stock available internationally to ensure that none of its qualities were lost.

Nevertheless, from the 1940s, the Golden Retriever raised in popularity, and is now one of the most famous dog breeds worldwide.

Origin of the Standard Poodle

Thought to have its roots in Germany, the poodle is a very well-liked dog breed that is also closely linked to France. Both of these countries claim and acknowledge the Poodle as if it is their national dog breed. However, the Poodle’s roots go all the way back to Germany.

Poodle, often known as a Pudel in German, is a diminutive of the Low German verb “puddeln,” which means “to splash.” Additionally, there are numerous artworks of recognizable Poodle-type dogs that date back to the 17th century that were created by various German artists.

The Poodle was created as something of a water retriever dog, and it was initially groomed in a specific way to improve the animal’s performance in the water. The breed has been utilized for a variety of tasks, including performing in circuses and searching for truffles (by sniffing the way to the truffle and digging it from the ground).

The breed’s characteristic lion coat clip evolved as a necessity while they have been used as waterfowler’s dogs. Its curly hair all around its chest provided protection for the dog’s heart and lungs in icy water, whereas the shorn hind legs reduced drag when diving and the patches of hair on the legs gave traction in the water.

The Poodle is one of the breeds with the most intelligence, and it has a classy appearance. The dog is bred in standard, miniature, and toy sizes in accordance with the American Kennel Club (AKC) standard. The same aesthetic principles apply to all three, which require a dog to have specific proportions, about which we will discuss a bit later.

What Does The Straight Coat Goldendoodle Look Like?

Photo from: @its_super_cooper

The Straight Coat Goldendoodle is considered to be a large medium sized dog breed to a large sized dog breed.

The Straight Coat Goldendoodle has the characteristic Doodle looks, which the Labradoodle also possesses.

A standard sized Straight Hair Coat Goldendoodle will be between 50 and 95 lb in weight. That is a typical weight of a large medium sized dog breed or a large sized dog breed. They can be anywhere from 21 to 26 inches in height at the shoulder area. They will reach their full potential, when it comes to an adult size, around 14 months of age.

If you are interested in other sizes that the Goldendoodles in general can be, check out the Goldendoodle growth chart.

The curly haired goldendoodle and the Straight Hair Goldendoodle don’t have many physical differences. They both have strong front and back legs, which are inherited from both of the retriever parent breeds. They are excellent swimmers, and they have tons of stamina.

They have a long, straight muzzle and longer ears covered in a layer of straight fur. Their nose is usually dark brown or black, and they have a rounded eye shape. Their eyes are mostly hazel, brown, or dark brown. On rare occasions, they can be amongst the blue eyed dog breeds.

Their ears are triangle shaped and they follow the natural line of the Straight Hair Goldendoodle’s head.

Looks Inherited From The Golden Retriever

The looks of the golden retriever are most obvious when the Straight Hair Goldendoodle is still a puppy. They exhibit the perfect purebred Golden retriever puppy face. When they are young, if you put a Straight Hair Goldendoodle and a Golden retriever side-by-side, you could only tell the difference by the curly coat.

Golden Retriever has always been a medium-sized dog breed with a robust build; in accordance with the Kennel Club standard of the growth chart of the Golden Retrievers, male dogs should stand between 22 and 24 inches tall and female dogs should be between 20 and 22 inches tall. Examples of healthy adults often range in weight from 55 to 75 lb.

Every Golden Retriever does indeed have a broad face with a well-defined stop, dark eyes that are evenly spaced apart, a wide and robust muzzle, a huge black nose, dark-pigmented, gently sagging flews, and medium-sized ears that are placed high and hang down with a small fold.

Golden retriever genes dictate that the shoulders are well laid-back and long-bladed, the body is deep through the chest, and the ribs are well-sprung. The neck is muscular, reasonably long, and has loose-fitting skin.

A distinguishing and eye-catching characteristic is the double coat. Whereas the inner layer is dense and offers weather protection, the external coat is lengthy and straight or wavy, and the forelegs have a good feathering.

Any hue of cream, yellow, or gold can be seen in the coat, however, it normally gets paler as it ages. Red or mahogany-colored coats are forbidden under breed standards set forth by the Kennel Club, whereas a few white hairs just on the chest remain acceptable.

Initially, only yellow or golden examples were allowed, which eliminated many exceptional cream-colored dogs. To fix this, the Kennel Club’s standard was modified to include the cream color in 1936. The Straight Hair Goldendoodles have definitely inherited the double coat from the Goldies.

Looks Inherited From The Standard Poodle

According to the breed standard, the Medium Poodle is around 14 to 18 inches tall, whereas the Standard Poodle is around 18 to 24 inches. Weight ranges between 44 and 71 lbs for an adult Standard Poodle in good health.

Poodles have rough fur and thick, curly coats. Every four to eight weeks, a Poodle should be professionally groomed by a dog groomer.

Poodles are frequently referred to as a hypoallergenic breed of dog. But do Poodles shed?

An individual Poodle can shed less dander and old hair into their surroundings because their hair strand follicles have a longer active development phase than those of many other dog breeds. This, together with the tight curls coat, that slows the removal of dander and old hair by keeping it throughout the curls, may help.

This means that every dog breed sheds to a certain degree. However, some dog breeds shed less hair or dander than others, of which the standard Poodle is definitely one.

The majority of the time, studies have not discovered a variation in allergies between breeds, which means that all the people with allergies are allergic to the same thing that dog’s hormones produce through the skin.

The puppy coat of the Straight Hair Goldendoodle looks a bit more on the curlier side, but as they grow up, the hair starts to straighten.

Colors Of A Straight Hair Goldendoodle

The Straight Hair Goldendoodle can appear in many different color schemes. However, the most usual ones are the solid color versions of the Straight Hair Goldendoodles.

The purebred golden retriever usually only has one color. The Poodle parent breed is also, most often, of one solid color. Therefore the Straight Hair Goldendoodle is also usually of only one solid color.

However, sometimes the Straight Hair Goldendoodle can appear with some patches or markings of another color. This is more of a rare situation since the Golden retriever parent and the purebred poodle parent almost always come without any patches of other colors.

Therefore, there are a few colors that the Straight hair Goldendoodle usually appears in. Those colors are: white, black, chocolate, apricot, champagne, gray, and Merle Goldendoodle.

Dog owners and dog breeders both claim that if their Straight Hair Goldendoodle has any patches or markings of other color, it is usually of a white color if the dog breed is of any of the darker colors. However there can also be a few darker hairs around the chest or back area on the lighter coloured Straight Hair Goldendoodles.

What Is The Difference Between Curly Hair And Straight Hair Goldendoodles?

You can conclude on your own that every puppy’s coat type will also vary depending on what crossbreed generation it comes from. A purebred Golden Retriever and a purebred Poodle are the parents of F1 or first-generation puppies.

In other words, each parent will contribute half of the puppies’ genetic composition. The F1 Goldendoodle is essentially a mix of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle.

The Goldendoodles usually do inherit a gene called krt71, known as the cu locus gene. That gene is also known as the curly gene, that gives the Goldendoodle the characteristic curly hair. Similarly, we can anticipate that backcross generations like the F1b, F1bb, F2b, and F2bb Straight hair Goldendoodles will have a higher prevalence of curly and wavy coats.

An F1B Goldendoodle, however, has one parent who is a purebred Poodle and one parent who is an F1 Goldendoodle. The puppies are therefore 25% Golden Retriever and 75% Poodle. Consequently, F1B puppies have a higher likelihood of having a wavy coat over F1 puppies.

However, it is good for you to know that Goldendoodles start shedding their puppy coat around five or six months of age, and that is when the adult coat starts to grow out.

As a rule, F1B puppies have become the most preferred Goldendoodle kind because they have an adorable teddy bear appearance that people absolutely love and a very low shedding coat.

How Do You Get A Flat Coat Goldendoodle?

Goldendoodles with straight coats are frequently described as having flat coats. However, not all Goldendoodles with straight coats have flat coats.

A Goldendoodle with something like the incorrect coat gene is known as having a flat coat because they don’t carry any furniture. Goldendoodles without furniture or with flat coats lack the distinctive scruffy Doodle appearance.

Goldendoodles with straight coats have short, silky facial hair, whereas those with flat coats can possibly have fluffy or wavy eyebrows and ears. They resemble the parent Golden Retriever quite a bit, in fact.

We advise you to look at either an F1 Generation Goldendoodle or perhaps an F2 Generation Goldendoodle if you’re searching for a Goldendoodle with straight hair since these generations have 50% Golden Retriever DNA. This increases the likelihood that you will choose a Goldendoodle with a straight coat.

Furthermore, if the Goldendoodle is an F2 Goldendoodle or second generation Goldendoodle, there is a good likelihood that they will have straight hair. In general, to increase your chances of getting a Goldendoodle with straight hair, choose a generation of Goldendoodles that is 50% Poodle and 50% Golden Retriever.

So, to get a Flat Coat Goldendoodle, do you need to chase after certain puppy litters and carefully look at the parents, and the grandparents too? Seek the puppy litter of your choice, so you find what serves the best for you. Goldendoodle breeders can help you with choosing the right litter because they often do genetic testing to find out whether the pups will be curly or flat haired.

Personality Of The Straight Hair Goldendoodle

Photo from: @its_super_cooper

This is one of the most fun dog breeds to be around, in my experience. They are really goofy, and just love to play and be in the presence of their human friends as equally as they like spending time with their furry friends.

If you love the Doodle breed, you undoubtedly already know how wildly energetic these amazing designer dogs are. Merle Goldendoodles are friendly dogs who enjoy spending time with their family in addition to having high levels of activity.

They get along nicely with kids of all ages because they are really sensitive canines. This is the main reason why the majority of Goldendoodle dog owners would agree that their dog is the ideal family pet.

You don’t need to be concerned about leaving your Goldendoodle and another dog in the house together while you’re gone because Goldendoodles like socializing with all other dogs and animals. By other animals, I also mean fish and other animals that live in the water.

Why? Because if you happen to live near a lake, sea, or a river, you will probably have problems with getting them inside your house, literally.

Goldendoodles belong to the group of dog breeds with the highest intelligence because they are offspring of two parent breeds that are also quite bright. Therefore, you won’t have any problems with training this dog breed – they will learn all the tricks in a blink of an eye.

They are a very active dog breed which requires loads of activities. They will always be happy to go for a long walk with you, or if you are a runner – feel free to bring your Straight Hair Goldendoodle with you. They will outrun you, for sure. However, if you aren’t that big of a runner, some toys for Goldendoodles will keep them busy for a while.

Designer canines like Goldendoodles are often in good health throughout their whole lives. This dog breed’s ethical Goldendoodle breeders ensure that the puppies have the finest possible start in life. They devote a lot of time and consideration to their breeding operations for Goldendoodles in order to produce healthy bloodlines.

The remainder is the owner’s responsibility after they have sold their Goldendoodle puppies. The healthiest possible Goldendoodle puppies are the result of responsible pet owners.

This entails bringing their Goldendoodle puppies in for routine vet visits, staying current on vaccinations, and administering the appropriate flea and deworming medicine.

To keep your dog’s health on the highest level, we recommend providing your dog with great quality dog food. It is best to acknowledge the basic Goldendoodle feeding chart, after which you choose the best dog food option and the best supplements.

Health Problems Of The Straight Hair Goldendoodle

Since the Goldendoodle and Poodle that make up a true Goldendoodle are descended from two different breeds, those two parent breeds’ congenital health conditions could be passed on to the offspring.

Having stated that, the following health problems are quite likely to affect the Straight Hair Goldendoodle puppies or adult Straight hair Goldendoodles:

• Hip dysplasia

• Addison’s disease

• Cataracts

These are the most common health issues of this dog breed. However, it doesn’t mean that these health issues will affect your pup for sure. These are just some conditions that you have to take more care of when it comes to your dog’s health.

At the very least, regular vet checks will do it. Because, if you find any illness in its early stage, it is significantly easier to deal with it. That’s why I urge every dog owner and dog breeder to do at least a yearly vet check, just to be sure that everything is going well.

How Much Does The Straight Hair Goldendoodle Puppy Cost?

Photo from: @goldendoodle_kingston

Even being a crossbreed, that does not stop the Straight Hair Goldendoodle from remaining on the pricier dogs list. They are everything but a cheap dog breed!

An established breeder will typically charge around $2,500 for a standard-sized Goldendoodle puppy. Expect to pay much more, around $3,000 to $5,000 if you want a multicolored standard Goldendoodle, or a mini Goldendoodle.

As a rule, the smaller Goldendoodles – teacup, toy, or micro sizes – that weigh less than 15 pounds will be much more expensive because they are thought to be more challenging to produce. The teacup and toy-sized Straight Hair Goldendoodles, on the other hand, are known to have serious health problems because of their small size.

Haircuts For The Straight Hair Goldendoodle

Some dog owners style Straight Hair Goldendoodle’s fur according to the climate they and their pet live in. For instance, those who live in a warmer climate may opt for the most simple, yet shortest haircut for a Straight Hair Goldendoodle.

However, those who live in colder climates may opt for some longer haircuts, but professionally groom their dog every few weeks. Also, those who live near water, will simply have to have their goldendoodles hair cut very short.

Besides these Straight Hair Goldendoodle haircuts, there are some goldendoodle haircuts that work towards exhibiting more of the famous Goldendoodle look.

Are Straight Hair Goldendoodles Hypoallergenic?

Right off the bat, the answer is both yes and no. I know this may sound confusing, but I will explain it to you in a second. Since they shed more than the Goldendoodles with curled or wavy coats, as you might anticipate, they tend to be less hypoallergenic.

READ MORE  You Won’t See Anything Sweeter Than These 13 German Shepherd Pups

For those who are allergic to animal fur, it’s not the hair itself that triggers a reaction. The dander, a mixture of expelled skin cells and saliva, is what causes the allergy. Compared to dogs that don’t shed as much, those that do tend to leave more dander.

The biggest drawback of a Goldendoodle with a flat coat is that they shed significantly more than their counterparts with curly coats. This is the only downside of the Straight Hair Goldendoodle.

It sheds more because the straight-haired Doodle has a lower proportion of Poodle DNA in its genetic makeup than other varieties. Nevertheless, Goldendoodles continue to shed less than purebred Golden Retrievers.

Hypoallergenic dogs or not, it is highly important that you brush your dog’s hair regularly to prevent tangles from forming. The loose hair can mat very easily, causing potential problems. However, that can be easily solvable by regular grooming. Therefore, it would be a great option for every dog owner to pick one of the best brushes for Goldendoodles, to keep your dog tangle-free.

They have that characteristic coat change from puppy coat to the adult coat that you will have to pay more attention to. This is the best time to see if you are truly allergic to this dog’s dander – when the coat change happens, that is when most dander is falling out.

Is The Straight Hair Goldendoodle Approved By The AKC?

straight hair goldendoodle in snowstraight hair goldendoodle in snow

Photo from: @goldendoodle_kingston

The AKC and other worldwide purebred dog associations do not accept Goldendoodles since they are technically mixed-breed dogs. A breed standard development breeding club has not yet been established as of 2019.

Goldendoodles are mixed breed dogs, whereas the AKC is a register for purebred dogs. This is true whether or not the parents were Poodles and Golden Retrievers with AKC registration.

You might want to explore some of the many events and activities available for canine companions. Several sports serve as examples, like manners, agility, flyball, water retrieve, dock dive, and more. These are held with the support of several groups, including the AKC. You can enroll your dog if you’re thinking about competing in AKC-approved competitions and earning AKC titles.

AKC Canine Partners Program welcomes all mixed dog breeds and crossbreeds, including the Straight Hair Goldendoodle.

Final Word

The teddy bear appearance that makes the breed so well-known is absent from goldendoodles. However, flat coat Doodles and their wavy coat counterparts are identical in terms of disposition and physical appearance.

Despite the fact that Goldendoodles with straight coats appear to shed more often than those with curly coats, they require less maintenance in terms of grooming because they don’t need to be shaved.

The negative is that Goldendoodles with curly coats shed less, so if you have allergies you would’ve been better off with one. Some who refer to the Straight Hair Goldendoodle as having an improper coat, may want to express that this dog breed is less hypoallergenic than the regular Goldendoodle.

However, this loving dog breed will make a joyful pet, for both singles and families with children. They are more on the active side, therefore you will have to give them what they need – loads of activities. From at least three daily walks to keeping them busy with some interactive dog toys.

Nevertheless, having all of this in mind, the Straight hair Goldendoodle is definitely a real dog breed which will serve you as a loving pet.

Don’t be fooled by these dogs’ large size – they will also be very happy to be your lap dog whenever you are watching TV!
