Finding a local breeder is always a good move: you want to avoid the expense and inconvenience of traveling or getting the pup shipped to your home.

However, this isn’t always easy. Breeders differ in many ways, including how many litters they produce each year, how many different breeds they stock, and how well they advertise. Hobby breeders might only have a litter once every couple of years. Some won’t even have their own website. Many don’t feel the need to advertise, as this costs money, and they are usually swamped with inquiries about their pups anyway.

Still, it doesn’t hurt to look in your local area, which is why we’ve scoured the web to find the best Mini Golden Retriever Breeders that might be relatively close to where you live.

As we’re only picking out the best five, it’s likely that some of you will find that they are far outside your local area. If so, you can still use this guide to find a good, reputable breeder that’s closer to home.

Alternatively, you can always check out your local animal shelters and dog rescues. This is a fairly new designer dog breed, but there’s still a chance that they’ll find their way into a shelter. It’s a slim chance, but always worth a look!

Now, we’ll move on to our first state.

Tiny Golden Retrievers of Orange County, CA, has everything on its website that you’d hope to see from a good breeder.

On its home page, you’ll find information about the Miniature Golden Retriever puppy. It begins by telling you that the parents come from several years of careful breeding to capture the look and personality of the Golden Retriever.

Further down the page, you’ll see that this breeder uses the SuperDog method of early neurological stimulation. Like all the best breeders, this one only produces one or two litters a year, and keeps things on a small scale. This enables them to devote their time to each individual puppy.

The dogs and their pups are kept and raised in a loving family home environment, exposed to the sights, sounds, smells, and experiences that you’d expect. They interact with kids and adults of all ages, and they meet a variety of animals. This is an excellent way of socializing a new puppy as it gets them used to a range of scenarios, so that they are able to deal with them when they are older, which results in well-adjusted adults that make the best family pets.

Another positive sign is that this breeder asks potential puppy owners to consider what’s involved when getting a new puppy. They ask you to think about the time, effort, and cost you’ll have to invest, as well as the possible damage to your home and property. They remind you that house training and adequate exercise are essential aspects of owning a dog. And, they end by stating that they will only release their pups to people they approve of.

On top of this, they offer a rebate scheme for any customer who enrolls their pup in formal training classes.

3. Mini Golden Retriever Breeders Utah

Taylormade definitely makes our list of Mini Golden Retriever breeders as they check all the boxes when it comes to being trustworthy and reputable.

They have an attractive, well-designed website that tells you all you need to know, with photos of the whole family, all of whom are involved in the daily business of breeding and raising perfect pups.

At the heart of it all is Michelle Taylor, who clearly devotes her life to her family and her dogs.

Michelle believes that all dogs deserve a loving home with a caring family, and this includes all of her breeding dogs. When Michelle decided to expand her breeding program, she maintained this belief and sought out guardian homes for her parent dogs. This ensures that each one is loved and pampered just as dogs should be, and not confined to kennels until they are no longer needed.

Although Michelle has a deep love for the Golden Retriever, she has accepted that they have common health problems, and that they shed heavily. This set her on a mission to produce a healthier dog that doesn’t shed as much, and she started breeding small Golden Retrievers.

Generally speaking, crossbreeds or designer dogs are healthier than their purebred counterparts, reducing the risk of problems like hip dysplasia.

Taylormade doesn’t currently accept visits in person as their dogs are kept in family homes, but every effort is made to allow buyers to view their pups and the parents by using the latest technology.

Puppy prices are between $5,550 and $6,000, and with each pup, you get:

• A registration certificate.

• A fecal test from a licensed veterinarian.

• A two-year health guarantee (and an optional five-year guarantee).

• A puppy starter pack with a toy or a blanket with the mother’s scent, a collar and leash, potty pads, a sample of treats, and puppy shampoo.

• A personal pet profile with advice on feeding and nutrition, as well as guidance on raising your new pup.

• 30 days of free pet insurance.

A shipping flight nanny service is available at an extra cost, starting at $750.

Taylormade’s website provides a whole load of useful information for new puppy parents, along with links to products that will make life easier.

Michelle welcomes any queries and questions via the Contact Us facility on her website, or by phone or text.

With more than forty years of experience in dog breeding, Kathy Burgess, of GoldenQuest, has accumulated a mountain of knowledge, becoming one of the most respected names in the business.

Along with her dedicated team based out of Versailles, Kentucky, Kathy combines science and technology to ensure that all pups are enriched before and after they are born. This gives them the best possible chance of living a long and healthy life.

Kathy is credited with producing the very first Mini Golden Retriever, trademarking the name, Comfort Retriever, which is still proving successful today. Kathy’s mission is to create healthy dogs with the sweetest temperament, making perfect companions for all. She strongly believes in giving back to the community, which is why she has placed many of her beautiful pups as therapy, service, and emotional support dogs.

Kathy’s expertise has resulted in a wonderful dog that is hypoallergenic, enjoys great health, and has a longer lifespan. Her passion for these dogs is obvious, as is her desire to make people happy.

You can see this for yourself at the GoldenQuest website, where you’ll also discover more about the puppy culture and the SuperDog early neurological stimulation program they use. It’s an impressive system, producing the healthiest and most well-adjusted pups around!

There’s a wealth of other helpful information on the website to help you understand more about GoldenQuest and the process of producing these wonderful dogs. The amount of time and effort involved is reflected in the price, as Kathy’s dogs cost between $5,600 and $7,000.

One point to note is that all of these pups come already spayed/neutered. Some experts believe that performing this surgery so early can result in health and development problems, although Kathy has been pursuing this policy for around 20 years, and she has never come across any problem. In fact, the evidence she has seen suggests that it increases the dog’s lifespan. If this issue concerns you, Kathy is happy to discuss this and answer any other questions.

5. Mini Golden Retriever Breeders; Washington State

Pacific Northwest Mini Goldens states on their website that they are close to nature, situated at the gateway to the Cascades and Puget Sound, but close enough to the city to enjoy the best of both worlds!

All the puppies born here are exposed to the bustle and noise of life with a large, busy family, which helps to socialize them and get each pup ready for the adventures ahead. The pups will meet a variety of animals as well as humans, helping them to recognize and accept them without fear or shyness.

On top of this, the breeder also uses the puppy culture method of neurological stimulation, starting when the pups are three days old and continuing until they are ready to leave at eight weeks old. They highly recommend that the new owners carry on the process until week twelve to ensure that it is completed successfully.

• Lifetime support from the breeder.

• A full health check by a licensed vet.

• A health record, and helpful information on puppy care.

• A sample of dog food.

Each pup is also dewormed and vaccinated. One point in the breeder’s favor is that they do not remove dewclaws as they point out that these have a function and a purpose.

You can buy a pup from them for the reasonable price of $3,500.

Pacific Northwest Mini Goldens welcomes visitors to view the pups (once they are 6 weeks old) and their parents, although you will be expected to follow precautions in order to keep the dogs safe from contagion.

What Is A Miniature Golden Retriever?

Now, you know where to get one, but how much do you know about this wonderful designer breed? It’s no great surprise if you haven’t come across them before as they’re a fairly new crossbreed.

As we learned earlier, the first Mini Golden Retriever to find fame was bred by Kathy Burgess in 2003, and this was a cross between the Golden Retriever and the Cocker Spaniel, known as the Comfort Retriever.

As with all designer dogs, it divided opinions. There were those who loved it and those who weren’t so keen. You generally find that enthusiasts of any breed are never happy when people start changing things. But, it goes beyond this. Designer breeds are never immediately accepted by any of the main kennel clubs, such as the American Kennel Club (AKC) because they are not purebred dogs.

The process of being recognized as a proper breed takes years, and it starts with breed clubs lobbying the AKC. Many breed clubs never get around to doing this as members spend too long debating the pros and cons.

Because of this, breeding remains unregulated, and there are no breed standards. This means that anyone can dabble in the world of dog breeding and genetics and come up with something that they feel will capture the hearts of dog lovers.

The trouble with crossbreeding is that you can never be sure which dogs have been used to create any particular mixed breed. It isn’t simply a case of getting a smaller version of the Golden Retriever… you also need to account for any gene passed on from the other parent. This can affect the coat type, color, temperament, and health of the puppy.

One reason why you must use a reputable breeder is that some unethical people deliberately use the dwarfism gene to produce smaller dogs, resulting in several health problems that will shorten the dog’s life.

More recently, Mini Golden Retriever breeders have used toy or Miniature Poodles, creating a beautiful mix of the two. Other breeders use the Cocker Spaniel, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and even Poodle mixed dogs. Sometimes, the process involves several of these breeds in order to achieve the desired result. This is reflected in the range of alternative names such as Golden Cavalier, Golden Cocker Retriever, and Petite Golden Retriever.

Some are produced by crossing a standard Golden Retriever with a Goldendoodle (which is a Retriever/Poodle mix), and these are often called Mini Goldens or Mini Goldendoodles.

As you might expect, breeding this smaller size is a delicate task that takes dedication, knowledge, and expertise. In the wrong hands, this can spell trouble for the pups as it can produce several health issues.

And, this is just one reason why you need a reputable breeder!

How do you go about this if the ones on our list are out of reach or presently don’t have any pups? Take a look at the next section to find out.

Finding A Good Breeder

Mini Golden Retriever looking up at breederMini Golden Retriever looking up at breeder

Unfortunately, not all dog breeders are trustworthy or ethical. Many are simply out to make a profit, and this is the biggest difference between the good and the bad ones.

The best breeders care about their reputation, and it takes years to build a good one. They also care more about their dogs and their chosen breed than they do about money. Few of them ever make a profit, and most will encourage you to adopt from a shelter rather than to buy a puppy, even if they miss out on a sale! That’s a sure sign of an ethical breeder and a true dog lover.

Aside from this, the best way to check out a breeder is by speaking to them and arranging a site visit. Most will be happy for you to do so, though they may not allow access to any new pup because of the risk of germs. While you’re there, check to see if it is clean and tidy. Small breeders prefer to keep their dogs in their home. They won’t use kennels, and if they do use them, they are comfortable, clean, safe, and close to the family home (or even inside it!).

Good breeders will also stick to producing just one or two dog breeds. If they advertise that they deal in many different breeds, this is a definite red flag.

Reputable breeders will invest a lot of time and effort into producing healthy, happy pups. They will start the socialization process very early, and some will even begin potty training.

The breeder should let you meet the parent dogs, and they’ll be happy to answer your questions and talk about their breeding program. They’ll also be keen to know more about you and your lifestyle, which is a good sign as they are showing an interest in where their pups are going.

All the best Mini Golden Retriever Breeders reserve the right to refuse to sell a puppy to anyone who they are not happy with.

A puppy mill, a puppy store, and a puppy broker won’t care about this as long as they get their money. It is wise to avoid buying your pup online if you want to avoid scams, or risk getting a sick puppy that has come from a puppy mill.

Some online businesses operate as puppy brokers, allowing you to browse pages of pups and pick one you like. The broker then contacts the breeder and arranges for the pup to be shipped out. All of these sites strenuously deny any contact with puppy mills, but the facts suggest that this is not entirely true. It would be wise to avoid using these services at all costs.

Sadly, other dog-oriented websites claiming to offer advice on the best Mini Golden Retriever breeders actually promote these places!

Finally, a reputable and ethical breeder will have a lengthy form to complete as well as a sales agreement. Most will enforce a strict spay/neuter agreement to encourage responsible dog ownership and to protect their breeding lines. Finally, they will always offer some kind of health guarantee.

It’s always best to remain wary and vigilant. We have listed breeders that appear to be safe and trustworthy, but it is up to you to make up your mind about any breeder.

Final Thoughts

Mini Golden Retriever sitting on patio looking at cameraMini Golden Retriever sitting on patio looking at camera

The Golden Retriever breed has long been a favorite because of its sweet, affectionate nature that makes it the perfect family dog. They also make excellent therapy dogs, and they have filled this role for many years.

However, standard Golden Retrievers can weigh up to 75 pounds, and measure as much as 24 inches at the shoulder, and some people prefer a more manageable size.

Mini Golden Retrievers are ideal as they weigh between 20 and 45 pounds, and measure between 14 and 20 inches at the shoulder. They are also classed as hypoallergenic, making them suitable for dog lovers with mild allergies. And, when you choose a good breeder, you’ll get a dog that will probably live for 15 years or more.

It’s easy to see why anyone would want one of these beauties. But, it is essential that you get one from a trusted, reputable breeder.

We’ve looked at the top five best Mini Golden Retriever breeders in the U.S., but as these dogs are popular, there will be a long waiting list. Don’t be tempted to pick another breeder without checking them out thoroughly, and never use a puppy mill, a puppy broker, or buy online!

We’ve given a few tips on finding a good breeder, so use these wisely, along with a healthy dose of common sense. Eventually, you’ll find your perfect pup.
