As we already mentioned, Blue Bay Shepherds are still limited edition dogs. They are quite rare and not many people have the opportunity, or perhaps the luck, to own them.

Even though it is hard to find an exact price for the Blue Bay Shepherd since it is relatively a new dog breed and still under development, according to some previous buyers of this dog, The Blue Bay Shepherd’s price should range between $2,000 and $3,500.

They are, as you can see, quite expensive puppies, however, you shouldn’t be surprised by this, since there are good reasons why this is the case.

Let’s see then, why do Blue Bay Shepherds cost so much?

Well, there are a couple of reasons, but it is mainly because they are a new breed of dog, and it takes a lot of work, time, and expense to produce a completely new dog breed. Especially when we are talking about a wolf hybrid.

The breeder has to take care of multiple breeds in the process of creating a new mix, which includes food, veterinarian care, and everything else. Not only that, but they also have to be able to provide appropriate outdoor enclosures, especially when it comes to wolf dogs who require a lot of outdoor activity.

When you think about it, the Blue Bay Shepherd price reasonably reflects the enormous amount of work that went into this project and all the efforts put into producing and maintaining this pure line.

Original Blue Bay Shepherd Breeder

Vicki Spencer from Southern Breeze Ranch is the only authentic breeder of the Blue Bay Shepherd dogs in the USA. She has been working on this breed for more than 20 years now. The first litter was produced in March 2011, however, she is still working on perfecting the bloodline.

It was her dream for many years to produce a breed that will have the loyal nature and trainability of the German Shepherd and the good health and stunning appearance of a wolf.

It was extremely hard to find the perfect dogs that were able to produce what she had imagined. Her quest involved mixing different breeds in order to get the perfect temperament that Blue Bay Shepherd dogs have, without any of the negative connotations that wolf dogs usually have.

Even though it is still unknown what breeds were actually used in the breeding process, there are some speculations that Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies were also a part of it.

However, what is confirmed is that some of the foundation animals were imported from one of the top breeders of European German Shepherds in France. These were Blue German Shepherds, which are extremely hard to find and exactly what she was looking for.

This proved to be a key part of her breeding process, since with those Blue German Shepherd dogs, she was able to achieve a beautiful blue coat color, lovely straight back, soft temperament, and sweet personality, which will make them ideal family pets.

Regarding their name; the “blue” obviously comes from their striking blue coat color, “shepherd” refers to the German Shepherd dogs that are in their ancestry, and “bay” refers to the place where this mixed breed is from, Palm Bay in Florida.

Don’t Trust Everyone

Recently, there have been a lot of people online claiming to have Blue Bay German Shepherd puppies for sale. You should be extremely careful of these scammers, since the only place where you can find a true American Blue Bay Shepherd is with the original breeder in Palm Bay, Florida.

These dogs are still in the developmental phase, and according to the breeder, they will be for several more years, so if your puppy is not from the original source, the breeder is probably not what they claim to be.

Each Blue Bay Shepherd puppy that is sold at Southern Breeze Kennel is registered and has a certificate with a unique number that is hand-signed by the owner, Vicky Spencer.

If you see someone else selling an animal claiming to be a Blue Bay Shepherd, always ask to see the certificates of both the puppy and the parents.

If by any chance they say that the certificate is lost, don’t hesitate to call the breeder because this can be easily verified, since every single dog has a registration number.

The best advice is to be careful and always stay attentive. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or to fact-check each dog breeder, since as a customer, you have every right to do so.

Blue Bay Shepherd For Adoption

It is highly unlikely that you are going to find a Blue Bay Shepherd for adoption somewhere. There are two major reasons why that is so.

First and foremost, these are rare dogs that we are talking about, so there aren’t many of them to begin with, and their number is still very restricted and guarded by the original breeder.

Secondly, due to their good temperament and behavior, the majority of Blue Bay Shepherd owners are very much happy with their dogs and would not leave them at a rescue or shelter.

This is quite good news, since it means that the breeder is on the way to producing a high-quality dog breed that will have a good future and make many new owners happy and ecstatic with their new family pets.

1. New Breed

The price of large, purebred dogs is usually significantly higher when compared to some other breeds. But, when you add to the mix a large breed with wolf DNA, an excellent temperament, striking appearance, and one that has only been developed in recent years, of course, their price is going to be higher than usual.

Up until now, not one Blue Bay owner has regretted buying this breed, so I am sure if you do purchase this dog, you will be really happy with everything that this beautiful dog has to offer. Even if you have to pay a little bit more, it is worth it.

2. Rare To Find

Anything that is extremely rare is usually also extremely expensive. This breed is not only new and still under development, but also, because of this, it is quite rare to find.

Since it is only possible to find these dogs at Southern Breeze Ranch, this means that there is a limited number of litters per year and therefore a limited number of dogs available to buy. Because of this, their price is still pretty high and will definitely continue to be for a couple more years.

Some Blue Bay Shepherd enthusiasts have even tried to make a new breed by mixing Blue Bays, German Shepherds, and Belgian Malinois, and thus, created a dog named the Lycan Shepherd.

3. Blue Color

The striking blue color and light eyes give these dogs quite a recognizable appearance. This blue color is a result of breeding the Old European German Shepherds with blue wolf dogs, and is something that adds to their price for sure.

Not many dog breeds have this combination and it gives them stunning looks that are sure to attract attention wherever they go.

4. Health

Since they carry malamute, husky, and wolf DNA, among many others’ that are still unknown, they are healthier than the original GSD and have fewer health issues.

However, even though there is less of a chance that they will have them, there are still some health issues that can appear, these are similar to the health problems of their parent breeds:

• Bloat – or also called Gastric dilatation-volvulus, is a condition that is more common in large breeds when they do an intense exercise right after eating and their stomach starts to twist, causing a blockage and damage to the internal organs.

Hip dysplasia – is a widespread hereditary disease among large breeds and especially German Shepherds. This condition affects the normal development of joins and causes pain and discomfort, which can then lead to arthritis.

Inbreeding depression – is a result of breeding related dogs, which can lead to a decrease in strength and fitness and therefore, lower the population’s ability to reproduce and survive.

5. Training

Just like their close cousins, the German Shepherds, Blue Bays are easy to train, intelligent, and can learn new skills pretty quickly. Easy trainability was one of Vicki’s top priorities when breeding these dogs.

They are also high-energy dogs, especially in their puppy stage and early adulthood, so as well as proper training, they will also need lots of exercise. Therefore, they are perfect for active families, preferably those that like to go running or hiking.

6. Lifespan

Dogs that have a bit of wolf blood are said to have fewer health issues and therefore live longer, and Blue bays are not an exception.

Even though it is still difficult to tell what the actual lifespan of Blue Bays will be, because they have only been alive for a decade, for now, their life expectancy is estimated to be up to 14 years or more.

Additional Costs Of Owning A Blue Bay Shepherd

The price of a Blue Bay Shepherd is comparable to that of any large dog breed. When you consider the price of other, similar-looking, large dog breeds, like German Shepherds, the Alaskan Malamute, or Wolf dogs, you can see that the price of Blue Bays is quite reasonable.

Are they expensive to keep? Well, they can be.

In many ways, the cost of owning a Blue Bay is approximately the same amount as other large breeds. However, besides the initial cost of purchasing a Blue Bay puppy, you will also have to think about shipping them from Florida.

If you live somewhere close to Florida, it will be easier to ship your puppy, but if you are from another state, you will have to travel and pay for the shipping, which can cost different amounts depending on the distance.

Diet

Since Blue Bays are quite big dogs and energetic, they require a lot of food. Most of them will require at least 5 cups of food per day, so prepare to spend a lot of money on their food.

They will need to be fed with high-quality dog food to support the normal development of their joints and bones. Also, because some of them may have sensitive tummies, you will need to choose a high-protein, premium kibble.

Some Blue Bays, especially those with a higher percentage of wolf DNA, may do better on a raw diet, which can be a more expensive option.

If you are unsure which food to get, a vet can help you choose the best one for your pup, depending on his age, size, and dietary needs.

Healthcare

Like any other dog, they will need regular vet visits to make sure that they are healthy. You will need to find a trusted veterinarian who will take good care of them, this can also cost a lot of money.

In the first year of their life, Blue Bays will need to receive their first shots to ensure that they don’t develop some of the more serious diseases as they grow up.

Toys And Supplies

A dog bed, collars, leashes, a dog crate, and toys are just some of the supplies that your dog will require. You should probably invest in some durable and quality chew toys, because these dogs can easily become very bored and will require something to keep them entertained.

Grooming

If you are not an expert in cleaning and grooming your dog, you will need to take them to a professional. Blue Bay Shepherds require the regular brushing of their coat and cleaning of their ears in order to prevent infections.

If you decide to do this yourself, you will also need to invest in a good brush or glove, some clippers for their nails, and your time of course.

Can You Own A Blue Bay Shepherd?

Blue Bay Shepherds were not bred to be guard dogs or working dogs, but specifically to be companions and family dogs. Even though their main trait is a sweet nature and sensible temperament, due to their wolf-like appearance they may be subject to certain laws.

Some states in America may require a certain permit or license in order to be able to keep any dog that has any connotations with wolves. This could be just a similar appearance or any wolf background in their ancestry.

Depending on the state and the license or disclosure that you are required to obtain, you may be subjected to a certain fee, so keep that in mind when you’re planning to get a Blue Bay puppy.

Even though most Blue Bay Shepherds have as little as just 6% of wolf DNA, they can still be impacted by these laws because of their significant lupine appearance.
